| Alimony Lawyers Kentucky Divorce AttorneysAlimony can still be an issue in divorces today. Kentucky law allows alimony however it normally is not granted in short term marriages. In order to win alimony a person must show that the other party has the income to pay it over and above his reasonable budget for living expenses. Further you have to prove that the party requesting needs the income and that you are unable to exist without this support. Also you should show that you are making reasonable attempts to limit your expenses and to become self-sufficient. Alimony is tax deductible to the person paying and it is a taxable item to the person getting it. Also if you get alimony it may be that you are not able to receive AFDC, SSI or other benefits. Divorces are sometimes bitter and sometimes it is impossible to divorce as friends and to reasonably split property. In such cases you need an attorney to get these benefits for you. In other cases it may be unreasonable to award alimony. However, if alimony is awarded attorney fees are also often awarded. The Divorce Manual fully discusses alimony and maintenance.
